- K0TT
- 15M WAS THE SWEET SPOT FOR ME. I HAVE THE BEST ANTENNA ON THAT BAND. SPENT MOST
OF THE TIME CALLING CQ WITH A SLOW BUT CONSTANT PARADE OF CALLERS. 20M
SURPRISINGLY PRODUCTIVE, AS I ONLY HAVE A DIPOLE AT 80'. NO ANTENNA FOR 80M, SO
MISSED A LOT OF POTENTIAL POINTS. A FEW WEAK CA STATIONS WERE HEARD AFTERNOONS
ON 10M BACKSCATTER FROM THE SOUTH AND SOUTHWEST, BUT ONLY MADE A FEW FEEBLE
ATTEMPTS TO CONTACT. MIGHT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MAKE A FEW Q'S IF RUNNING HIGH
POWER. MISSED ONE COUNTY, SIER. NEVER HEARD ONE.
- K1ESE
- FUN. 73.
- K1GQ

- GREAT QSO PARTY. LOTS OF ACTIVITY AND I ONLY MISSED SIERRA AND MERCED
COUNTIES. THANKS TO ALL THE CASUAL CA OPERATORS FOR KEEPING IT INTERESTING. 73, JOE, K1JB
- K1TH
- ALWAYS LOOK FORWARD TO THE CQP. REMINDS ME OF THE MANY TIMES I HAVE VISITED.
- K1TN
- I DON'T CARE ABOUT "WINNING," OR ABOUT CERTIFICATES OR PLAQUES. BUT I DO WISH RESULTS WOULD BE LISTED BY MODE FOR THOSE OF US WHO CHOOSE NOT TO WORK PHONE (OR CW, FOR THAT MATTER).
AND I WISH THE CQP WERE NOT RUN OVER TWO DAYS. THERE'S JUST NOT ENOUGH ACTIVITY FROM CALIFORNIA TO JUSTIFY IT. IF YOU HAD LOTS OF ROVING MOBILES THAT WOULD JUSTIFY TWO DAYS. BUT YOU DON'T. AS FAR AS I KNOW THE ONLY ROVING MOBILE I WORKED THIS YEAR WAS K6AQL (AND LAST YEAR, TOO).
I KNOW, I KNOW, IF YOU SHORTENED THE TIME THEN RECORDS WOULD HAVE TO CHANGE SOMEHOW. BUT I THINK THE TIME LENGTH IS MAKING THE CQP PRETTY TIRESOME FOR THOSE OF US OUTSIDE CALIFORNIA. I KNOW IT IS FOR ME.
THE CQP IS PRETTY MUCH A 20-15-10 METER RUNFEST FOR CA BIG GUNS. THEY SPEND THEIR TIME UP THERE AND PRETTY MUCH IGNORE 160, 80, AND EVEN 40 THIS YEAR.
THANKS FOR LISTENING.
JIM CAIN, K1TN
- K1YSY

- WOW. THIS WAS NOT MY NORMAL CONTEST EXPERIENCE IN MY QUEST TO SEE WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH JUST 100W AND A DIPOLE. IT WAS A CONTEST OF "NEVER HAPPENS" HAPPENING.
CQP IS THE ONLY CONTEST IN WHICH I DO MUCH CQING. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE STATIONS WHO PULLED MY WEAK SIGNAL OUT -- ESPECIALLY THE EU STATIONS. LOOKING AT THE SPOTTING HISTORY, I NOTICED THAT I WAS EVEN SPOTTED FROM EU, WHICH HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. IT WAS REFRESHING TO WORK EU ON CW AND SSB. OFTEN THEY WERE THE LOUDEST SIGNALS ON THE BAND!
WE REALLY SHOULD PAY MORE ATTENTION TO TEN METERS. I PERIODICALLY CHECKED 10 AND SAW LITTLE OR NO ACTIVITY. BUT I TRIED CQING FOR A FEW MINUTES ANYWAY, AND PICKED UP A HANDFUL OF STATIONS EACH TIME. ONE TIME IT WAS N8NA IN DE -- WHICH IS ONE OF THE MULTIPLERS I USUALLY MISS. ANOTHER TIME IT WAS DL5AXX -- I NEVER GET ANSWERS FROM EU TO MY CQS. THERE WERE A LOT MORE CONTACTS TO BE HAD ON 10M, IF ANYBODY WAS AROUND.
KUDOS TO THE QRP STATIONS WHO WORKED ME. YOU GOT A GOOD SIGNAL IN TO COASTAL CALIFORNIA TO MY WIRE UP 30 FEET, AND YOU HAVE GOOD EARS ON YOUR END TOO.
80M IS THE ONLY BAND I EVER FEEL "LOUD" ON. HAD A RUN OF 49 QS AT A RATE OF 136/HOUR. THAT ALSO NEVER HAPPENS TO ME.
ALL IN ALL, A GOOD CONTEST. I DIDN'T MAKE QUITE AS MANY QS AS LAST YEAR. IT SEEMED LIKE ACTIVITY WAS LOWER, DESPITE THE PROPAGATION. OR MAYBE THE SKIP WAS SO LONG I JUST WASN'T HEARING "LOCAL" STATIONS ON THIS CONTINENT.
LOTS OF FUN. LET'S DO IT AGAIN......

- SCORE IS DOWN FROM LAST 2 YEARS. AT THIS POINT I'M NOT SURE WHY. IT SEEMS MY QSO COUNT IS CLEARLY DOWN FROM THE LAST 2 YEARS. I WAS SURPRISED SATURDAY AFTERNOON, 23:26Z ON 15M TO BE CALLED BY OH6CT. THEN SUNDAY AFTERNOON BEING CALLED BY STATIONS IN ENGLAND AND GERMANY. I MISSED BOTH DAKOTAS, ME, VT, RI, MS, SC, MN AND AR. I ALSO MISSED VE'S 2, 4. 5 AND 8. I HAD SO HOPED TO TOP LAST YEARS SCORE, BUT IT JUST WASN'T THERE. THANKS TO ALL THE KBERS FOR POINTS ON 160 AND 80, I WORKED 25 OF THE 58 CA COUNTIES, WHICH IS ALSO DOWN FROM 2011 AND 2012. ALSO, DAVE, KA7BIM/7 WAS MY ONLY 2 CONTACTS IN OR. I WORKED HIM ON BOTH 80 AND 160. I ALSO WONDER IF I WAS THE ONLY CW STATION IN STANISLAUS COUNTY BECAUSE I NEVER FOUND ANOTHER ONE TO WORK ON ANY BAND. 73'S TO ALL. BERT, K6CSL
- K6FA
- TR4W LOGGER WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO USE CORRECT SECTION FOR VE9AA - MR SO USED NT.(QSO 241)
HAD A GREAT TIME. THINK I BROKE MY OWN RECORD. FIRST CONTEST WERE I WAS ABLE TO HOLD A FREQUENCY. ONLY 100 WATTS AND A VERTICAL. SEE YOU NEXT YEAR AS LONG AS MILITARY RESERVES DOES NOT GET IN THE WAY.
- K6FWT
- I STAYED ON A HOMEBREW 28' ROOFTOP VERTICAL FOR THE ENTIRE EVENT BECAUSE NVIS AT NIGHT ON 80 WASN'T WORKING FOR ME: MUF WAS ~3MC AT MY EUREKA QTH.
I HAD A GOOD TIME, EVEN WORKING AROUND FAMILY OBLIGATIONS!

THANKS TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED. 73 AND HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL NEXT YEAR.
- K6KYJ
- IT SUCKS WHEN YOU SPEND TWELVE HOURS SETTING UP AND TAKING DOWN YOUR CE STATION BUT ONLY END UP ON THE AIR FOR SIX HOURS AND 65 Q'S. AND SISKIYOU COUNTY WAS ALREADY WELL-COVERED. BUT, I'M JUST AN OLD GROUCH.

- SET UP ON TIMBER MOUNTAIN FIRE LOOKOUT AT 5000 FT IN THE MODOC NATIONAL FOREST. TWO K3+KPA500 STATIONS, ONE K3+SB200. 1 TRIBANDER ON 40' TOWER, 1 TRIBANDER ON 30' PIPE, WIRES ON LF. GENERATOR POWER ON ONE STATION. SHORE POWER ON THE OTHERS.
CONDITIONS WERE REASONABLY GOOD. THE WEATHER WAS VERY NICE AND THE FOOD WAS FIRST CLASS. WE SEARCHED FOR NT BUT NO LUCK. IT SEEMS WE WERE NOT ALONE IN THAT REGARD. IT WAS NICE TO GET A 10M OPENING ON SUNDAY. IN THE END WE DID NOT DO AS WELL AS LAST YEAR. MOSTLY DUE TO CONDITIONS BECAUSE WE HAD GOOD OPS, AND NO PROBLEMS WITH MURPHY.
THE CODXC HAS BEEN DOING CQP FROM MODOC COUNTY SINCE 1999. THIS COULD BE OUR LAST EXPEDITION. DRIVING 200 MILES TO COMPETE WITH GROUPS WHO HAVE A WEEK TO SET UP IS NOT AS MUCH FUN. THE RULE CHANGE WILL NOT BE GOOD FOR THE CQP.

EXCELLENT PROPAGATION ON 15M CREATED MANY EU DX CONTACTS IN THE FIRST FEW HOURS OF THE CONTEST ALL WORKING CQP. I AM TIRED, SORE, AND DIRTY FROM WORKING A COUNTY EXPEDITION SOLO IN A PRUNE ORCHARD BUT AM SATISFIED WITH THE RESULTS. MANY THANKS TO EVERYONE I WHO WORKED K6Y! 73!

COMMENTARY:
ANOTHER ENJOYABLE MULTI-MULTI COUNTY EXPEDITION TO INYO COUNTY. ONCE AGAIN
WE HAD SEVERAL FRIENDS JOIN US FROM OUT OF STATE WHICH IS A TESTAMENT TO HOW
MUCH FUN CQP CAN BE. AS WE HAVE DONE FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS, WE SETUP
FIELD DAY STYLE AT W6PH'S CABIN NEAR LONE PINE, CA. THIS YEAR WE TOOK
ADVANTAGE OF THE NEW 7 DAY RULE FOR SETTING UP EXPEDITION EQUIPMENT. W6PH
STARTED MOVING THE AB-577'S AND ANTENNAS FROM STORAGE AT HIS HOUSE ON
MONDAY. IN THE PAST WE HAD WAITED UNTIL THURSDAY SO WE COULD SET UP ON
THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND FRIDAY. THE EXTRA TIME WAS HELPFUL AS THE WEATHER
WAS VERY WINDY ALL DAY THURSDAY AND FRIDAY MORNING. HALF OF OUR CREW WORKED
ALL DAY WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY SETTING UP. THE OTHER HALF ARRIVED ON
FRIDAY. WE MANAGED TO HAVE EVERYTHING SET UP BY FRIDAY AFTERNOON SO WE WERE
ABLE TO KICK BACK AND ENJOY SOME OF KI6VC'S GREAT BBQ AND HOMEBREW, A
TRADITION FOR OUR CQP CREW. IT IS INTERESTING TO SEE THE TRANSFORMATION OF
THE CABIN SITE FROM QUIET COZY LITTLE HIDEAWAY TO "WHAT THE HECK ARE
THOSE
GUYS DOING" SITE. I'M SURE THE LOCALS THINK THE NSA HAS DROPPED IN FOR
THE
WEEKEND! WE ALWAYS HAVE A FEW PEOPLE STOP BY AND WONDER WHAT WE ARE UP TO.
WE HAD A FEW MINOR TECHNICAL ISSUES BUT FOR THE MOST PART EVERYTHING WORKED
FAIRLY WELL. THE 80M SLOPER WAS HUNG FROM THE SAME AB-577 THAT SUPPORTED
THE 40M BEAM WHICH RESULTED IN A LOT OF INTER-STATION INTERFERENCE ON 40M.
THAT HURT OUR PRODUCTIVITY ON 40M SOMEWHAT. WE ALSO HAD A PC FAILURE AND
HAD TO SWAP COMPUTERS ON ONE STATION. CONDITIONS OVERALL WEREN'T QUITE AS
GOOD AS THE PAST FEW YEARS BUT CONDITIONS INTO EUROPE WERE VASTLY IMPROVED.
WE WERE FORTUNATE TO HAVE SNAGGED ALL 58 MULTIPLIERS ABOUT 5 HOURS INTO THE
CONTEST.
THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THE QSO'S AND THANKS TO THE NCCC FOR SPONSORING THE
CQP.

- K7ACZ
- VERY DIFFICULT DOING THE CQP FROM LAS VEGAS, NV. I AM JUST TOO CLOSE TO MOST CA STATIONS PLUS HAVE MOUNTAINS BETWEEN US. CA STATIONS WERE LOUDEST ON 40 MTRS BUT NOT TOO MANY CA STATIONS WERE ON 40. I WOULD JUST KEEP HEARING THE SAME STATIONS. 80 WAS A BUMMER. NOT HEARING TOO MANY CA STATIONS ON 80 SATURDAY NITE BUT THOSE I HEARD I WORKED. 20 MTRS WAS A BUST. I COULD NOT HEAR CA STATIONS AT ALL. I COULD HEAR THE EAST COAST STATIONS WORKING CA BUT COULD NOT HEAR THE CA STATION THEY WERE WORKING. 15 MTRS WAS MY BEST BAND. AFTER AN HOUR OR SO ON 15 MTRS WITHOUT GOOD RESULTS I SWUNG MY BEAM AROUND TO 60 DEGREES TO WORK CY0P. I THEN DISCOVERED THE CA STATIONS WERE MUCH STRONGER OFF THE BACK OF THE BEAM. WAS IT LP OR BACK SCATTER? I DON'T KNOW BUT BOTH SAT AND SUN I HEARD AND WORKED CA BETTER AT 80 DEGREES, 260 LP, EVEN NORTHERN CA STATIONS. I TUNED AROUND 10 MTRS FROM TIME TO TIME BUT HEARD NO CA STATIONS AND VERY FEW DX OR EAST COAST STATIONS WORKING CA. BUT EVEN ON 15, MY BEST BAND, CA STATIONS WERE WEAK AND SOMETIMES IT TOOK MANY CALLS BEFORE THEY HEARD ME CALLING IN BETWEEN THE STRONG EAST COAST STATIONS WORKING THEM. SOME NEVER HEARD ME. SO NOT AS MUCH FUN AS WHEN I WAS K6ACZ IN ORANGE COUNTY PLUS I DID COUNTY EXPEDITIONS TO IMPERIAL AND TULARE. HOPING FOR BETTER COND NEXT YEAR.

FIRST CONTEST I ACTUALLY TOOK SERIOUS, THOUGH WASN'T EXPECTING TO GET TOO FAR! PER THE CONTEST RULES I AM A NEW CONTESTOR (FIRST CONTEST OVER 100 QSOS). I DID LEARN QUITE A BIT ON WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE! :^) I HAD TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES AFTER ABOUT 5 HOURS. THE SEND RELAY WAS STICKING ON MY ICOM 746 BUT ONLY WHEN I USED THE AMP. SO TECHNICALLY SPEAKING I WAS MORE IN THE LOW POWER CATAGORY THEN THE HIGH. UGH! :( THANKS FOR A FUN CONTEST!

- MISSED 2012 CQP, AND THIS WAS FIRST CQP FROM THE NEW QTH. WAS BEST RESULT
FOR EAST TEXAS OPERATIONS SINCE 2005.
NO 10-METER CONDITIONS, HEARD W6RKC BUT COULD NOT WORK HIM. HEARD N6O ON
160, COULD NOT WORK HIM. SINCE THIS IS NEW LOCATION WITH NEW ANTENNAS SOME
LESSONS, AS EXPECTED - WERE LEARNED.
1. THE ALPHA-DELTA DX-LB IS ONLY 40' UP. IT HAS TO GO HIGHER, ONCE I
FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET PAST LIMBS IN THE WAY. ON 40 METERS IT WAS VERY GOOD
TO W6 AND COULD NOT WORK 6-LAND ON 80 WITH IT, HAD TO GO TO THE VERTICAL,
LESS THAN IDEAL.
2. I PROBABLY DO NEED A SECOND C3 ON THE DOMESTIC TOWER SO I CAN GET A
LITTLE MORE GAIN OUT OF THE SYSTEM. (NEXT SEASON)
ON 15M KH6LC CALLED IN TO TELL ME THAT I WAS THE CONSISTENT 5-LAND SIGNAL
THERE AND WE CHATTED A BIT ABOUT CONDITIONS BEFORE WE BOTH WENT BACK TO CQP.
W6RKC TELLS ME THAT ON 15M I WAS OFTEN THE STRONGEST SIGNAL ON THE BAND ...
WAS SURPRISED THAT IT'S ONLY 100W. 20M LESS ABILITY TO TAKE CONTROL OF A
FREQUENCY, ON BOTH USUALLY GOT THE QSO ON THE FIRST S&P CALL.
LAST COUNTY WORKED WAS AT 0347 (MERCED).
I WAS ABLE TO RUN ON BOTH SSB AND CW AFTER DOING S&P TO CLEAN UP THE RUNNING
6-LAND FOLKS. THIS WAS PRODUCTIVE.

- I'VE ENJOYED CQP EVERY YEAR SINCE 2009, ALWAYS CW ONLY.
AT 46.4 K MY CLAIMED SCORE WAS DOWN SLIGHTLY FROM MY
PERSONAL BEST OF 50.7 K LAST YEAR. I MISSED 7 COUNTIES
(COLU, KING, MADE, MONT, SJOA, SIER, AND SISK)
VS ONLY 4 MISSED IN 2012. I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO
WORKING K6UN/M AFTER THEY PUBLISHED AN OPERATIONS PLAN
LISTING 9 COUNTIES, INCLUDING KING AND MADE WHICH I MISSED.
BUT, I NEVER HEARD K6UN IN 12.5 HRS. BIC. I DON'T KNOW IF
THEY WERE UNABLE TO GET ON, OR OPERATED SSB ONLY. I DID
WORK K6AQL IN 4 COUNTIES, INCLUDING MY ONLY QSO IN MERC:
THANKS FOR THAT, GUYS, EVEN IF YOU DIDN'T PUBLISH A PLAN!
MANY THANKS TO ALL WHO ORGANIZED OR OPERATED IN CQP.
I FIND IT A GREAT WARM-UP FOR THE CONTEST SEASON.

- THE FIRE CAME WITHIN 100 YARDS OF THE CABINS IN TUOLUMNE CABIN, AND COMPLETELY ENCIRCLED THE AREA. TWO WEEKS AFTER THE FIRE PASSED THE AREA AND TWO WEEKS BEFORE CQP, ?? OF RAIN FELL, BUT THAT WASN'T ENOUGH TO PUT OUT SMOLDERING TREES AND STUMPS. AT THE TIME OF CQP, THERE WERE STILL THINGS SMOKING AND OCCASIONAL TREE STUMPS WOULD CATCH FIRE. APART FROM VERY NEARLY LOOSING OUR CQP LOCATION WE MET THE PRIMARY GOAL OF CQP AND HAD A ENJOYABLE TIME. THANKS TO ALL THE STATIONS THAT WORKED US.

- TWENTY MINUTES AFTER THE CONTEST BEGAN WE LOST
ALL ELECTRICAL POWER IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. I WASN'T PLANNING ON
PARTICIPATING FULL TIME ANYWAY SINCE WE HAD A FIERCE SANTA ANA WIND
STORM WITH GUSTS APPROACHING 50 MPH. SO THE TOWER WAS RETRACTED AND
THE RADIOS COULDN'T EVEN BE TURNED ON! I HAD NO IDEA WHEN POWER WOULD
BE RESTORED. I ALSO NEEDED TO DO SOME YARD MAINTENANCE SINCE THERE
WAS DEBRIS ALL OVER THE PROPERTY AND IN THE SWIMMING POOL. BY THE
TIME THINGS WERE UNDER SOME MODICUM OF CONTROL, I WAS TIRED AND IT
WAS GETTING DARK. THE CONTEST WAS A COMPLETE BUST FOR ME. I PLAYED
FOR THE LAST 2 1/2 HOURS OF THE CONTEST WHEN THE WINDS CALMED. MAYBE
THE WEATHER WILL COOPERATE NEXT YEAR?

WE OPERATED AGAIN MULTI-MULTI FROM 5000 FEET IN A SIERRA WILDERNESS AREA USING SOLAR POWER, BATTERIES AND GENERATORS. NO COMMERCIAL POWER, NO PAVED ROADS AND NO NEIGHBORS OTHER THAN DEER, BEARS (SMALL ONES)AND RATTLESNAKES FOR MILES. :-) WE HAD THREE HP STATIONS OPERATIONAL. WE ARE ALL OLD FARTS..THE YOUNGEST IS 64 AND THREE OF US ARE IN OUR 70S! WE HAD SOME HEALTH ISSUES AND MURPHY ISSUES THIS WEEKEND BUT WE STILL HAD A LOT OF FUN. THANK YOU NCCC FOR CREATING A GREAT CONTEST EVENT FOR ALL OF US!

- THREE POWER OUTAGES EARLY SUNDAY A.M. TOOK AWAY SOME OF MY OPERATING TIME. OTHER THAN THAT I HAD A GREAT TIME AND LOOK FORWARD TO NEXT YEAR.

- A GREAT ACTIVITY, AS ALWAYS - HAD A LOT OF FUN, BUT WITH SOME FRUSTRATIONS (ASIDE FROM THOSE ASSOCIATED WITH RUNNING QRP!). UNFORTUNATELY I NEVER DID HEAR MERCED, SO MISSED THE SWEEP. BUMMER! TEN METERS NEVER OPENED UP HERE. BUMMER AGAIN! I WAS ABLE TO BEAT MY PREVIOUS PERSONAL RECORD, BUT FELL JUST SHORT OF THE ALL-TIME QRP RECORD FOR NON-CA. WE'LL SEE HOW THIS SCORE HOLDS UP AGAINST THE GUYS THAT HAD 10 METER PROPAGATION!
THIS YEAR'S CQP WAS A LOT OF FUN, WITH SOME FRUSTRATIONS THROWN IN. AS ALWAYS,
I WAS RUNNING QRP SO SOME OF THE FRUSTRATIONS ARE MY OWN FAULT! I WAS ABLE TO
BEAT MY PERSONAL RECORD, BUT FELL JUST SHORT OF THE ALL TIME NON-CA QRP RECORD.
THE CA ACTIVITY SEEMED GOOD.
THE LOW BANDS PAID OFF SURPRISING WELL, BUT OF COURSE I HAD TO DO LOT OF
REPEATS, ESPECIALLY ON 80. ON THE OTHER HAND 10 NEVER OPENED UP HERE IN THE
BLACK HOLE OF THE UPPER MIDWEST. I COULD VERY FAINTLY HEAR SOME NON-CA
STATIONS IN THE SE US, BUT DIDN'T HEAR ANYTHING OUT OF CA. - I HADN'T HELD
MUCH HOPE OF 10 OPENING THIS WEEKEND, BUT IT WAS STILL DEPRESSING TO HEAR...
NOTHING. WITH QRP, 10 METERS CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD. I
THINK IF I COULD HAVE JUST HAD A COUPLE HOURS OF A DECENT OPENING, I COULD HAVE
BEATEN THE QRP RECORD. OH WELL - WE ALL HAVE TO PLAY THE CARDS THAT THE
PROPAGATION DEALS US. FORTUNATELY 15 METERS WAS SOLID AND IT WAS DEFINITELY
THE WORK-HORSE BAND FOR ME.
ONE FINAL FRUSTRATION WAS NOT GETTING THE SWEEP. I NEVER HEARD A SINGLE MERCED
STATION. BUMMER!
BUT ALL-IN-ALL, THIS REMAINS A GREAT QSO PARTY AND I TRY TO KEEP MY SCHEDULE
CLEAR EVERY YEAR SO I CAN PLAY! THANKS TO ALL THE GREAT CA OPS FOR YOUR GOOD
EARS AND PATIENCE IN PULLING MY 5 WATTS OUT OF THE NOISE! SEE YOU AGAIN NEXT
YEAR!

SO, DURING THE DAY I WAS LIMITED TO WORKING CENTRAL AND NORTHERN CALIFORNIA STATIONS ONLY. HOWEVER, 40 AND 80 METERS WERE OPEN TO ALL OF CALIFORNIA. IT IS A FUN CONTEST IN SPITE OF THE LIMITATIONS OF LIVING SO CLOSE IN ARIZONA.

WELL, MURPHY HIT HARD IN THIS CQP. AS MUCH AS WE TRIED, WE COULD NOT GET ANY
SUBSTANTIAL RUNS GOING ON 10 METER SSB SATURDAY AND AGAIN ON SUNDAY WHEN THE BAND INITIALLY APPEARED TO OPEN BETTER THEN SATURDAY. I SAW THAT SEVERAL OTHER COASTAL SOCAL STNS ALSO DID NOT DO WELL ON 10, WITH FEWER THAN 100
SSB QS BUT K6QP CCE TEAM IN IMPERIAL COUNTY OUT TOWARDS ELCENTRO, HIT THE JACKPOT ON 10 MTR BAND WITH WELL OVER 200 QS COMPARED TO OUR PALTRY 62 SSB. WE MISSED THE ONLY VY1 STATION VE8GER, WHO APPARENTLY WAS S&PING AND GIVING OUT THE GOLDEN MULT TO A LUCKY FEW STATIONS. WE PICKED A SITE THAT UNFORTUNATELY FORCED OUR TOWER TRAILER TO BE TOO CLOSE TO THE OPERATING POSITION AND INTERNET MODEM, CAUSING RFI PROBLEMS FOR THE FIRST FEW HOURS WITH STUTTERING CW KEYING AND NEVER LETTING US USE PACKET OR SKIMMER SPOTS TO ANY AVAIL. TWO MORNINGS IN A ROW I FELT LIKE I WAS DOING A "MY COUSIN VINNY" RERUN, AS STARVED FOR SLEEP,I WAS AWAKENED AT SUNRISE SATURDAY MORNING AS OUR HOSTS HAD APPARENTLY LINED UP A WORKER TO COME IN AND PLAY A NICE LOUD TUNE ON HIS CHAIN SAW OUTSIDE MY OPEN WINDOW AND ON SUNDAY A FLOCK OF ABOUT 3 DOZEN CROWS DECIDED TO SING ME ANOTHER LULLABY AGAIN AT SUNRISE. AH, YES, QUIET COUNTRY LIVING!
WE FELT THE TEAM DID VERY WELL ON ALL OTHER BANDS AND MODES BUT FOUND 15 VERY TRYING AT TIMES WITH POOR PROPAGATION AND DEEP QSB FADES. 20 DID NOT PLAY AS WELL AS LAST YEAR'S CQP BUT 40, 80 AND 160 CONDITIONS SEEMED BETTER THAN LAST YEAR. SEE YOU ALL NEXT YEAR FROM A BETTER COUNTY EXPEDITION SITE.

- LAST SOME WEEKENDS I WAS QRV IN SEVERAL QSO PARTIES, AND BECAUSE I WAS SO TIRED
I HESITATE TO TAKE PART ALSO IN CA QP ...
I MADE MY DECISION IN FRIDAY - TO TAKE PART IN :)
SOME STATISTIC'S:
1ST DAY: 1 HOUR BEFORE THE CONTEST I CQ ON 10M AND HAVE NICE PILEUP, BUT NO ANY
WEST COAST STATION. QP I BEGAN ON 15M AND CALIFORNIAN STATIONS WAS STRONG. MY
LAST QSO ON 15M WAS AT 20:15Z. UNFORTUNATELLY 20M WAS OPEN ONLY TILL 21:07Z AND
MY FIRST QSO ON 40M MADE ONLY AT 00:34Z ...
40M WAS EXCELLENT, THANKS FOR THE NICE PILEUP ON SSB. ON CW I WAS ONLY S/P AND
MADE 69! QSO.
MY LAST 40M QSO WAS AT 07:05Z. I TRY 20M, BUT NO USA OPENING IN EARLY MORNING.
I WENT TO SLEEP SOME HOURS.
2ND DAY I BEGAN ON 20M AT 13:52Z, BUT MADE ONLY FEW QSO'S AND I QSY TO 15M. THE
CONDX WAS SAME EXCELLENT ON THIS BAND AS ON SATURDAY. SOMETIMES I CHECKED 10M,
AND AT 15:01Z I FOUND MY FIRST CA STATION ON THIS BAND... :)
I ASK ALL WKD STATIONS TO MOVE TO OTHER MODE, BUT ONLY FEW DO IT ...
15M CLOSED AT 21:02Z AND I WENT TO THE 20M. UNFORTUNALELLY ONLY FEW STATIONS
WAS ON THIS BAND - I THINK MOST OF THEM WAS ON 15M/10M ...
I MISSED ONLY SIERRA COUNTY.
TO BEAT 10 YEAR'S OLD DX RECORD I MISSED ONLY 13 CW QSO'S (OR SIERRA CTY + 6 CW
QSO) ...
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE NICE QP AND FB QSO'S!!!

FIRST OF ALL, THANKS TO W6YX FOR ALL BANDS (OK, NOT 6M OR 2M, BUT C'MON!)
THESE GUYS WERE EVERYWHERE AND HAD AWESOME EARS. THE ONLY ONE TO PULL ME OUT
ON 160M JUST AS DAY BROKE HERE THIS MORNING.
A FEW 5 BANDERS AND MANY MANY 4 BANDERS.
10M WAS VERY GOOD TO ME, THOUGH OFTEN SIGNALS WERE JUST 1 NOTCH ABOVE ESP THE
SIGNALS WERE THERE FOR HOURS. IT WAS A WASTELAND, SO I CAN ONLY PRESUME THAT
FROM THE CALIFORNIA END, IT WAS OPEN TO THE WATER OUT EAST, WEST, SOUTH OR
WHATEVER A LOT OF THE TIME. EVEN HEARD SOME 6'S WORKING G/F/EA ETC.
I WORKED LOTS OF 1X1'S BUT NO IDEA IF I SPELLED ANYTHING SIGNIFICANT (LOL)
LEFT 12 COUNTIES ON THE TABLE, FLOOR OR OTHERWISE NOT IN MY LOG. ONLY DEVOTED
8 HOURS TO THE TEST AS HAD MNI OTHER THINGS GOING ON.
A REAL NICE SHOWING FROM ALL THE W6 HOME STATIONS. ONLY WORKED A VERY FEW
MOBILES HOWEVER. A BIT OF A DISAPPOINTMENT.
VERY HAPPY WITH RESULTS. WONDERING IF GARY VE1RGB GOT ON FROM CY0P....HE WAS

- I HAD A GREAT TIME WORKING FROM MY NEW RANCH STATION LOCATION IN SOMERVILLE COUNTY TEXAS. THE RANCH IS LOCATED ON "CHALK MOUNTAIN" APPROX1,260' ASL 12 MILES WEST OF GLEN ROSE. I DON'T HAVE ANY PERMANENT ANTENNAS AT THE RANCH AS OF YET. FOR CQP I ONLY USED A CAROLINA 80 WINDOM WIRE ANTENNA ON A 30' PUSH UP FIBERGLASS POLE. ONLY WORKED 15M AND 20M DURING THE CONTEST. THANKS AGAIN FOR HOSTING ONE OF MY FAVORITE STATE QPS.

THIS WAS THE 3RD COLLABORATIVE EXPEDITION FROM MODOC COUNTY BY WQ6X & N6GEO,
RUNNING AND ICOM 7000 & YAESU FT-897 INTO A MULTIPLEXED TH3-JR 8MH, ALONG WITH A PAIR OF PHASED COBRA DIPOLES (FOR 40-METERS), AN HF2-V VERTICAL (FOR 80-METERS) AND A BUDDIPOLE (FOR 10-METERS), ALL POWERED BY A HONDA GENERATOR.
SOAPBOX:WE BOTH RAN CW & SSB, MAKING CONTACTS ON ALL BANDS FROM 160 TO 10 METERS.
WHILE WE LISTENED FOR 6-METER OPENINGS NOTHING CAME OUR WAY SO N6GEO REPLACED THE 3-EL 6-METER BEAM WITH THE BUDDIPOLE SO WE COULD TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SURPRISING 10-METER OPENING ON SUNDAY.
THE TH3 MADE POSSIBLE SUPER 15-METER OPENINGS TO EUROPE ON BOTH DAYS AND AN INCREDIBLE OPENING TO EUROPE SUNDAY MORNING ON 10-METERS. WE SUCCESSFULLY RAN THE 8JK COBRA DIPOLES AS PHASED INVERTED V'S FOR 40 METERS. FOR 80-METERS, THE GROUND MOUNTED HF2-V WAS OUTSTANDING, PRODUCING AN OPENING TO THE EAST COAST AT THE UNHEARD OF TIME OF 02:45Z. CAREFUL TUNING OF THE HF2-V WITH AN OLD DENTRON JR. TUNER ALLOWED WQ6X TO MAKE A SINGLE CONTACT ON 160; ENOUGH TO SAY THAT WE WERE THERE.
MISSING IN THIS YEAR'S CQP WERE STATIONS FROM AFRICA AND OCEANIA. WE ALSO
MISSED A SWEEP BY 2 SECTIONS; QC (VE2) AND VERMONT (VT), WHICH WE ARE TOLD PRODUCED 5 STATIONS.

78+ N1MM 160 DIPOLE, 80/75 INV VEE, 40 1/2 WAVE SLOPER, 20 5EL
YAGI, 15 4EL YAGI, 10 5EL YAGI.
THAT WAS A LOT OF FUN!
I SET A FEW GOALS FOR MYSELF. A SWEEP, A CA COUNTY SWEEP, A RATE OF 100/HOUR,
300K FINAL SCORE.
THE SWEEP TOOK A WHILE. BY SATURDAY NIGHT I WAS STILL MISSING VT, KL7 AND NT.
KL7AIR CALLED IN ON 75 FOR #56! SUNDAY MORNING I WORKED A COUPLE VT STATIONS.
WHEN I FELT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON 15 AND 10 BUT WAS NOT GETTING ANY TRACTION I
FIRED UP ON 20. AFTER A FEW QS I HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE GER. AS MY PULSE
QUICKENED I TURNED THE BEAM DUE NORTH AND THERE WAS VE8GER FOR THE SWEEP. I LET
OUT A LOUD WHOOP! STATESIDE, I MISSED 4 CA COUNTIES.
THE 100/HOUR RATE SEEMS LOW, BUT IN EVERY CQP I STRUGGLE TO BEAT IT. I WAS 60
QS OFF THE MARK WHEN I SHUT DOWN AT 0720 FOR THE FULL 6 HOUR OFF TIME. I DO
BETTER WITH SLEEP, HI! SUNDAY WAS TOUGHER GOING. I NEVER SEEMED TO BE IN THE
RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME. ON 15 I HAD A BEAUTIFUL CLEAR FREQUENCY AND ONE
Q WITH A WI STATION WHO SAID I WAS 30 DB OVER. BUT NOBODY ELSE ANSWERED MY CQS.
SO I QSYED. A LITTLE WHILE LATER ALL THE REAL ESTATE SEEMED TO BE GONE. 10 WAS
HOT AND COLD. I MARVELED TO HAVE 9A CALL IN AND AN ME STATION THAT SOUNDED NEXT
DOOR. AT TIMES SIGNALS SOUNDED LIKE THAT MAGICAL 6 METER OVERLOAD-YOUR-RECEIVER
STRENGTH.
I REVISED MY QSO GOAL AND WAS HAPPY TO CROSS THE 2000 MARK IN THE LAST HOUR.
THE 300K MARK ELUDED ME BY 5 CW QSOS. THERE WERE MANY BIG HOLES IN MY LOG WHERE
THOSE FEW CONTACTS COULD HAVE BEEN MADE. C'EST LA VIE.
N6WIN WAS CERTAINLY A FITTING CALL SIGN FOR DAN, N6MJ. ONCE AGAIN HE SHOWS US
HOW IT IS DONE. KUDOS, DAN!
THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR I HAVE WORKED SO MANY EU STATIONS. WELCOME TO THE PARTY!
ON 15 FONE I WAS CALLED BY A DO9 STATION WITH STRONG MUSIC IN HIS AUDIO. I FELT
I WAS WORKING A SHORT WAVE BROADCAST STATION!
THANKS TO ALL FOR THE MANY CONTACTS. IT IS FUN TO REVISIT BAND BY BAND, MODE BY
MODE.

- IN ORDER TO PLACE HIGHER NATIONALLY IN CQP, WE SEATTLE GUYS NEED A TOTAL BLACKOUT OF 10M AND 15M! CLEARLY, 80M AND 160M DO NOT MAKE UP FOR THE "LOSS" OF THE HIGHEST BANDS FOR US, WHERE SDIE MAY BE 20DB OVER, BUT ALL COUNTIES NORTH ARE EXTREMELY WEAK, OR NON-EXISTENT. NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD HOPE FOR POOR CONDX!
- W7LKG
